Real Wedding: Kaitlyn & Nejc’s Love Story Told Through Watercolor Wedding Invitations
When Kaitlyn and Nejc approached me about creating invitations for their dual-celebration wedding, I knew we were embarking on something extraordinary. Their vision united the dramatic mountains of Slovenia’s Logar Valley with the iconic San Francisco skyline, creating two complementary suites and styles for two celebrations. One at home in San Francisco and one abroad in Slovenia. And their vision celebrated both their cultures and communities through thoughtfully designed stationery.
Where did we start?
Their custom watercolor monogram
The cornerstone of their stationery suite became a custom monogram that married two worlds – the wild beauty of a California Poppy with the delicate charm of a Slovenian mountain Edelweiss flower. This meaningful symbol would become the thread that tied together all their wedding elements across two continents, from their intimate Slovenian ceremony to their vibrant California reception.
How Did We Capture Two Distinct Celebrations?
The Slovenian Ceremony Suite
For their intimate ceremony in the Logar Valley, we crafted invitations that captured the majesty of the Alpine setting. The suite featured:
- Watercolor texture paper
- Soft, misty blues and greens echoing the natural landscape
- Bilingual text in English and Slovenian
- Their custom monogram
- An original watercolor of the mountains and valley below
The San Francisco Reception Suite
A few months later, for their California reception, we shifted the palette and the font pairings to give the celebration a more fun, casual feel. While the artwork style and materials, tied it altogether:
- Watercolor texture paper stock
- Watercolor skyline featuring the iconic Fine Arts building and the venue location
- Modern typography with fun, casual wording
How Did the Day-of Details Tell Their Story?
Ceremony Elements in Slovenia
For the ceremony in Slovenia, the stationery took on an old world feel with lots of handmade paper details, linen signage, and soft blue chiffon ribbon. The ceremony stationery included:
- Delicate welcome notes for family members
- Intimate dinner menus on deckled edge handmade paper
- Carefully crafted bilingual signage
- Custom linen seating chart
California Reception Details
The day-of details for the California reception allowed us to play with a similar color palette and illustration style, with a more modern feel to represent the more casual post-nuptial celebration
- Custom cocktail signs featuring drinks that represented both cultures
- Custom favor tags and signage for Slovenian liquor the couple brought back from their destination wedding
- Table numbers
- Welcome Sign
- Place cards
What Made This Watercolor Wedding Invitation Suite Unique?
I love when we can use original artwork to create such a unique and personalized story that really captures the spirit of the journey and the destination. From the mountains of Slovenia, beautifully rendered in delicate watercolor, to the incorporation of two destination flowers into their monogram, and the skyline view of their San Francisco reception venue, we gave the guests a lot to look forward to.

Material Choices
Every element was carefully chosen to reflect both tradition and the vibe of each celebration:
- Deckled edge handmade paper for an old world feel
- Textured watercolor paper to capture the artwork and make it feel hand painted

- Linen fabric and handmade paper for signage
Color Palette
It’s not often that we get to work with two color palettes for the same couple. The first focused more on blues and greens, inspired by the natural landscape.
While the second event shifted more into oranges and reds to capture more of an evening party vibe. We had blue and the monogram as a constant throughout to keep the work consistent-feeling across both events.
Cultural Integration
And of course, we always love when we can showcase the blending of two cultures together into one family. The suite married two worlds through:
- Bilingual text thoughtfully incorporated
- Meaningful botanical symbols
- Color palettes reflecting both landscapes
- Typography mixing old world and new
What Was the Impact?
The couple was overjoyed to see how their heritage and story were woven throughout every piece, from the smallest place card to the largest welcome sign. The stationery tied everything beautifully together, creating a cohesive experience despite the months and miles between celebrations.
The Final Result
Thanks to their photographer, Aljaž Hafner, we have beautiful documentation of how these pieces came together. This project reminded me of the power of thoughtful stationery to tell a story and unite people across continents. Their wedding wasn’t just about combining two people, but about bringing together two cultures, two landscapes, and two celebrations into one beautiful narrative.
