When S and J told me they were getting married at a beachfront resort in Cabo San Lucas, I knew their wedding weekend itinerary needed something extraordinary. With guests traveling from across the U.S. for a three-day celebration, they needed a beautiful way to communicate the weekend schedule and help guests navigate Cabo’s stunning coastline and their resort’s sprawling property.
Rather than a standard printed itinerary, we created a custom watercolor wedding map of their Cabo resort and the surrounding Baja Peninsula that became both a practical guide and a gorgeous keepsake guests could frame after the celebration.
A custom wedding map is an original watercolor illustration that shows your wedding venue, nearby locations, and points of interest for your destination celebration. Unlike generic printed maps, a custom watercolor map captures the specific places that matter to your wedding weekend—ceremony sites, reception venues, recommended restaurants, activities, and local landmarks—all painted in a beautiful artistic style that matches your wedding aesthetic.
For S & J’s Cabo wedding, the map needed to show their resort property where most events were happening, plus key locations in downtown Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo where they’d planned group activities and recommended their favorite spots for guests to explore.

Creating a custom watercolor wedding map involves several thoughtful steps to ensure it’s both beautiful and functional.
I started by discussing with S & J and their wedding planner exactly which locations mattered most for their weekend. They had multiple important events it was essential to highlight — a welcome party at the hotel, a ceremony on the poolside terrace, and an after-party on the rooftop. They also wanted to share their favorite Cabo experiences: the best beach club, where to find amazing shopping in San José del Cabo, the marina for epic sunsets, and the classic Cabo arches.
Next, I studied maps of the resort property and Cabo area, then sketched the layout emphasizing wedding weekend locations and S & J’s recommended spots. Using watercolors in warm desert tones—sandy beiges, terracotta, and turquoise ocean blues —I hand painted the coastline, resort, and downtown Cabo.
The painting process involved layering transparent watercolors to create depth and dimension, adding details like palm trees, conch shells, and the iconic Arch of Cabo San Lucas. I incorporated small illustrations of sailboats, coconut drinks, and traditional Mexican tile design elements that gave the map and overall booklet authentic Cabo character.

A well-designed destination wedding map should include all the information guests need to navigate your celebration and explore the area.

If you’re creating a watercolor map for your destination wedding, I would recommend you include things like your venue, hotels guests are staying at, nearby spots for coffee, nightlife, beaches, or meals, popular tourist attractions, and the closest airport.
The best maps feature 5-10 main locations with less than five of those spots fully illustrated and the rest showcased as smaller icons. You don’t want to go too overboard with dozens of locations and crowd your beautiful map design.

The finished custom wedding map was printed as a 5×7″ booklet on premium cardstock with silk ribbon and included in welcome bags that greeted guests at resort check-in. It served multiple purposes throughout the weekend: beautiful artwork that set the tone for the celebration, practical navigation tool helping guests find venues and activities, and a detailed schedule showing where and when each event was happening.
This is exactly why custom watercolor wedding maps are perfect for destination celebrations. They transform practical weekend logistics into beautiful artwork that captures your wedding location’s spirit and becomes a meaningful keepsake guests treasure long after your celebration ends.
