When A and T told me they were getting married at a ranch nestled beneath the Teton Range in Jackson Hole, I immediately knew their wedding weekend itinerary deserved something as breathtaking as the landscape surrounding it. With guests flying in from across the country for a long weekend of mountain celebrations, they needed a beautiful, practical way to help everyone navigate Jackson’s wide-open terrain — from the resort ranch to the winding roads of Grand Teton National Park.
Rather than a standard printed itinerary, we created a custom watercolor wedding map of their ranch venue and the greater Jackson Hole Valley that became both a functional guest guide and a stunning keepsake worthy of framing long after the last dance.
What Is a Custom Wedding Map?
A custom wedding map is an original watercolor illustration that captures your wedding venue, nearby locations, and points of interest specific to your destination celebration. Unlike a generic printed map or digital itinerary, a custom watercolor map tells the story of your wedding weekend through art — painting the specific places that matter most, from ceremony sites and reception venues to favorite local restaurants, outdoor adventures, and iconic landmarks — all rendered in a beautiful style that matches your wedding aesthetic.

For A & T’s Jackson Hole wedding, the map needed to convey both the grandeur of the Tetons and the intimate warmth of a ranch wedding. It had to be useful on day one and beautiful enough to hang on a wall for years to come.
How Do You Create a Wedding Map?
Creating a custom watercolor wedding map is a thoughtful, multi-step process that balances artistry with careful planning.
I started by talking with A and T about which locations were essential to their weekend experience. There were several key events to highlight: a welcome bonfire at the ranch, a ceremony on the meadow overlooking the Tetons, a seated dinner under the stars in the barn, and a farewell brunch the following morning. Beyond the wedding itself, they wanted to give guests a curated guide to the area — their favorite spots for elk viewing in the National Park, the best spot for coffee in downtown Jackson, the iconic Million Dollar Cowboy Bar for late-night dancing, and the historic Town Square with its famous antler arches.
From there, I studied Google maps layouts of the valley and the ranch property layout, then sketched a composition that balanced the dramatic mountain backdrop with the intimate details of the celebration. Using watercolors in a palette of deep pine greens, dusty sage, warm golden wheat, and the moody blue-grey of the Tetons at dusk, I hand-painted the sweeping valley, the ranch, and the downtown square.

The painting process involved building up transparent layers to capture the atmospheric haze that settles over the mountains, adding fine details like lodgepole pines, a split-rail fence, grazing elk, and the jagged silhouette of the Grand Teton itself. Smaller details — like a lone moose in the mountains and jumping fish — gave the map an authentic Wyoming character that felt personal rather than generic.

What Should a Destination Wedding Map Include?
A well-designed destination wedding map should give guests everything they need to navigate your celebration and explore the area with confidence.
A & T’s Jackson Hole map featured:
If you’re planning a mountain or ranch wedding map of your own, I’d recommend including your venue, guest lodging, a few key spots for meals and nightlife, iconic local landmarks, and any outdoor experiences you want guests to have. Jackson Hole is particularly wonderful to map because the landscape itself — the Snake River, the National Park, the valley floor — gives the illustration so much natural beauty to work with.
The most effective maps feature five to ten main locations, with a handful of those fully illustrated and the rest represented as smaller icons or labels. The goal is a map that feels curated and personal, not cluttered.
The Final Wedding Map and Guest Response
The finished custom wedding map was sent to the couple for them to print on their wedding stationery and use on their wedding website. Throughout the weekend it served as artwork, conversation starter, practical guide, and schedule — all in one. Guests were spotted consulting it on the way to the ceremony and propping it up on their cabin mantels as décor.
This is exactly what makes custom watercolor wedding maps such a meaningful addition to destination celebrations. They transform a weekend itinerary into an heirloom — something that captures the spirit of the place and the feeling of the weekend in a way no printed schedule ever could.
